Top Skin Care Ingredients of 2010

27 Oct

In a recent article by Sam Dhatt, M.S., M.B.A, the latest developments and discoveries in skin care ingredients are highlighted and explained. Some of these ingredients are tried-and-true favorites of the aesthetic community, while others are brand new and hot on the lips of those in the know.

Dhatt begins (and rightly so) with some of the essentials of skin care, all chalked up to #1. His tried-and-tue favorites are: hyalauronic acid, vitamin C, and alpha hydroxy acids. Each of these ingredients run the gamut of skin care products and each are essential in anti-aging, cell turnover, and even acne treatment.

Next up, he shines the light on zinc, an easily forgotten yet highly important mineral- especially when it comes to sun protection. Many people seem to forget that sun damage is wounded skin, and wounded skin is aging skin. Protecting your skin from the sun is of utmost importance and zinc is the knight in shining armor of sun protection. Recently, huge developments have been made regarding the application of zinc. Gone are the days of old when zinc meant a big white streak across your nose. Now, with new micronized formulations, zinc can be formulated into a lotion that is completely clear on the skin.

Photosomes are next on Dhatt’s list. Photosomes are plankton extracts which, when exposed to extreme UV rays actually use the energy from said sunight (or, UV rays) to repair existing ultraviolet damage. They can be found in sun care products from sunscreens to moisturizers. In essence, they almost negate being in the sun in the first place!

As Dhatt himself says, no top-10 list would be complete without an antioxidants category. His antioxidants of choice are vitamins A and E, green tea, and vitamin C. Again, each of these ingredients plays a crucial role in the anti-aging process. But remember: apply your vitamin C in the AM and your vitamin A in the PM.

Following antioxidants on Dhatt’s list is an ingredient that may sound a bit foreign to some. Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) has been touted as the “universal antioxidant” because it fights free-radicals on the outside and inside of the cell membrane, as well as the inside of the cell itself. Further, once it crosses the cell membrane, it is broken down into an even more powerful free-radical neutralizer: dihydrolipoic acid (DHA). However, it’s next super power is one we hold near and dear to our hearts. Have you ever forgotten to screw the cap all the way back on your vitamin C, E, or co-Q 10? ALA has the power to actually regenerate these formulas once they have become oxidized (used). Talk about a team player!

Next is another ingredient that you may or may not have heard of. Idebenone has been called the “king of the next generation of antioxidants” due to its ability to both repair and protect the skin from sun damage. If you aren’t yet familiar with idebenone, you may know its close relative, coenzyme Q10, a powerful antioxidant that has long been used in skin care. But look for your favorite products to begin replacing co-Q10 with idebenone, for idebenone has better penetrative qualities, bringing more oxygen into your cells which generates healthy cell renewal and protects fat molecules from becoming oxidized or infused with free-radicals. Think of idebenone as a cellular bodyguard.

Dhatt’s next two picks are not nearly as scientific as the former. Olive trees have been researched for centuries, from the oil to the fruit and now more than ever: the leaf. Natural olive leaf extract has been shown to protect the lipids in cell walls from oxidation. Another study showed a dramatic increase in skin elasticity- 63% on the forehead and 81% on the cheek. Look for this ingredient to become a household name! Dhatt’s other pick from the natural world is emblica, an antioxidant isolated from phyullanthus emblica, an edible fruit that is a key treatment plant is Ayurvedic medicine. In addition to being a great antioxidant, emblica is also an extremely efficient- and safe- lightening agent. Due to emblica’s vast arsenal of benefits, many skin care lines are using it to replace the popular skin-bleaching hydroquinone.

Rounding out Dhatt’s list of favorites is one of our personal favorites, too.  Dhatt says, “peptides have brought anti-aging to a new level of care in both the skin care room and in home care.” Collagen, a close relative of peptides, cannot penetrate the epidermis due to its large molecular size. Fortunately, peptides have been reengineered from amino acid chains to penetrate the skin with ease. Within the peptide family, there are many varieties.

Palitoyl pentapeptide-3, more commonly known as Matrixyl is an incredibly impressive antioxidant that also carries the power to stimulate new collagen, elastin, and glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) in the dermal layer of skin as no other topical ingredient has. It’s not an overnight cure, but have patience and you will reap the amazing benefits of Matrixyl over time.

Acetyl hexapeptide-3, also known as Argireline is a six-amino-acid chain that actually works similar to BOTOX because it keeps the signal protein (catecholamine) from connecting to the cell to trigger a muscle contraction– but without the paralysis that BOTOX causes. Hexapeptides are one of the most sought after ingredients today- look for it in an array of products from eye creams to moisturizers.

Lastly, palmitoyl tetrapeptide-3 has shown breakthroughs in improving microcirculation, increasing the oxygen supply to tissues and strengthening and protecting the integrity of the collagen and elastin in the skin. And like any good antioxidant, tetrapeptides minimize free-radical damage and reduce inflammation. All of this results in a reduction of puffiness and dark circles around the eyes and a noticeable reduction in wrinkles and fine lines. Look for peptides in at-home products as well as treatments in the spa or from your aesthetician for noticeably more youthful skin.

Warning: Do Not Try This at Home

25 May

Lately, America seems to be consumed with the idea of DIY, or Do It Yourself. With the advent of YouTube especially it is getting increasingly easier and easier to learn skills, hobbies, crafts, tricks, and trades online.

Unfortunately, it seems- things have gone too far.

In an article published on MedicalSpaMD, they relay a story aired on ABC’s 20/20 about a short-lived online company who was selling Botox and Dermal Fillers online to the masses (sans prescription) and then… (gulp)…. teaching them how to inject themselves YouTube videos.

Here is their article that followed:

Some consumers are ordering prescription-only cosmetic products online and injecting themselves at home. One woman who self-injected her face with filler said it caused bags and lumps under her eyes, and a hard, infected pustule on her cheek.

For millions of Americans, the solution to crow’s feet, thin lips, and frown lines is at the end of a syringe, or in a bottle. A quick trip to a medical spa, dermatologist, or plastic surgeon for a Botox injection, lip augmentation or chemical peel offers the promise of a youthful look. But these cosmetic procedures — and the medical expertise that comes with them — don’t come cheap. For a single treatment of Botox, doctors charge about $380; for lip-plumping injections, over $500; and for a chemical peel, a whopping $700.

These high prices are enough for some consumers to take their business away from medical professionals, and go instead to the Web. They are “doing it themselves,” ordering prescription-only products online, and injecting themselves at home.

Laurie D’Alleva, of Mansfield, Texas, is a big fan of “DIY” beauty injections and treatments. She is the face of DiscountMedSpa.com. a website stocked with what she claims are pharmaceutical-grade cosmetics, similar to Botox, Resylane, and Retin-A.

Self-injecting botulinum toxin might sound dangerous, but D’Alleva, 39, tries to put her customers at ease with informational videos, complete with tips and pointers on how, and where, to inject. “It doesn’t hurt… It’s easy,” D’Alleva claims in one video, as she stands in front of a mirror and injects her face repeatedly.

Disaster isn’t what “Alex,” a paramedic, had in mind when she visited DiscountMedSpa.com a few months ago. In her 40s and dating, she just wanted to improve her look, and save some money. She asked ABC News not to disclose her identity.

After viewing “every one” of the instructional self-injection videos on D’Alleva’s site, Alex was convinced she could do it herself, since using needles was part of her job.

“Why should I pay somebody else that got a few hours of training to do something I think I can do pretty easily?” she said she thought at the time.

Alex paid $450 for  DiscountMedSpa products including an injectable facial filler. She says she injected the products under her eyes and alongside her mouth.

But “the next morning, I woke up horrified by what I saw,” she said. “Literally, my heart started pounding, and I thought, ‘What have I done, what am I going to to do?”

Please ladies and gentleman, do not seek out prescription products on the internet. Be it Botox, Latisse, Retin-A, Hydroquinone, or any pharmaceutical medication.

It is extremely dangerous and the risk just isn’t worth it.

Trust the professionals and keep in mind that you get what you pay for.

Wrinkle-free, happy people holding hands?

25 May

Today, a tweet asking, “Botox for Treating Depression?” by American Health and Beauty intrigued me.

Especially so, because at our Open House last night we had five people get Botox injections in two hours!!

So, did they all wake up on the right side of the bed today?

According to the article, there is a new study to be published on the effect Botox has on patients who have existing symptoms of depression.

Here’s how it started:

“According to the Washington Post, a number of physicians were noticing that patients who had reported symptoms of depression prior to receiving Botox injections often reported that their symptoms had faded and they were feeling better. The study involved 40 patients who were shown pictures of faces expressing emotions, both before and 2 weeks after treatment. After Botox, patients were slower to recognize angry or sad emotions on the faces of others, but showed the same reaction time to happy emotions as before Botox.”

I know, it seems a bit far-fetched, right?

Well, read on as this explanation may change your mind:

“The study is set to be published in the journal Psychological Science and supports the ‘facial feedback hypothesis.’ This states that physical expressions inspire an emotional response from our brains, and not just the other way around. In this case, the Botox injections prevented frowning, and so delayed the perception of negative statements.”

Fascinating, no?!

After more research, it seems this theory holds its weight:

“The facial feedback hypothesis suggests that muscular manipulations which result in more positive facial expressions may lead to more positive emotional states in affected individuals. In this essay, we hypothesize that the injection of botulinum toxin (Botox) for upper face dynamic creases might induce positive emotional states by reducing the ability to frown and create other negative facial expressions. The use of botulinum toxin (Botox) to pharmacologically alter upper face muscular expressiveness may curtail the appearance of negative emotions, most notably anger, but also fear and sadness.”

According to these findings and the facial feedback hypothesis, it would make sense to further assume that your Botox injection will make others happier as well.

It continues:

“Based on the facial feedback hypothesis, this net change in facial expression may potentially have the secondary effect of reducing the internal experience of negative emotions, thus making patients feel less angry, sad, and fearful.”

Wow, Botox! Not only do you hide (disable, really) our wrinkles- but you also:

  • Treat Migraines
  • Prevent future wrinkles
  • Make us, and those around us, happier!
  • And at $10 per unit- you really can beat it!

    Botox for Migranes??

    24 May

Since we welcomed Botox to the Refresh family, we have heard so many things about this wonder product. Some farfetched, some outright inane. But there is one rumor that may change your life.

Last Friday, our friends at NewBeauty asked {and answered!} a very great question!

    Will Botox Block Your Migraines?

You may have heard that Botox is being used off-label to treat migraine headaches, but the proof of its effectiveness is more anecdotal than clinical. That doesn’t mean that botulinum toxin type A, which is also available as Dysport, isn’t effective for this puprose- it may boil down to the type of migraine being treated.

Researchers recently attempted to determine which kinds of migraine can benefit most from botulinum toxin type A. They studied 18 patients who would be receiving cosmetic Botox injections, all of whom reported migraines- though different types.

Three months after injections, the patients who described their headaches as crushing and vice-like (imploding) or eye-popping (ocular) experienced an average reduction in frequency from more than seven days per month to less than one day per month. Those who described their headaches as exploding, however, felt little to no change.

“Our results provide support for the hypothesis that patients with migraine that is characterized by imploding and ocular headaches are more responsive to botulinum toxin type A than those with migraine characterized  by exploding headaches,” the study authors wrote in the Archives of Dermatology. “Our findings invite consideration of using botulinum toxin type A injections to prevent migraine headaches and may promote the role of the dermatologist [and plastic surgeon] in the treatment of patients with migraine. However, well-controlled trials need to be conducted to confirm these findings.”

    Pretty interesting findings.

Do you ever feel like your head may implode? Migraines are serious business and can interfere with your daily life, work, and relationships.

And if you are anything like the woman in the photo– you can cure your migraine AND get rid of those lines in your forehead that look like the number 11.

Call us today and kiss your migraines good-bye one wrinkle at a time! 720.314.1965
